1964 was a sort of an “In between year” for the half dollar. It was the first year of the newly designed John F. Kennedy half dollar, but it was also the last year that 90% silver coinage was minted in the United States. The following years up until 1969, the Half dollar was only 40% silver and 60% copper. The JFK half dollar is still the design used today for the half dollar although the composition of the coin from 1970-Present is mostly copper.
